Hollywood coming to Coatesville area

A movie based on the book, "The Lovely Bones," will be partly filmed in Chester County. The schedule, as of now, includes filming at the South Brandywine Middle School on summer days as well as Nov. 10, 12, and 13. The school board approved the filming Tuesday. The film cast includes Susan Surandan, Rachel Weisz, and Ryan Gossling. -- JM

Coatesville better get some tax revenue from this filming....

If not, maybe Patsy Ray can go to the filming and ball them out until they pack up and leave.

That will help.

Hey 5:01am
Now there is an expression I don't think I have heard since leaving Coatesville....."ball them out"! I knew exactly what it meant because, as kids, we got "balled out" many times by teachers, parents and neighbors. Note: I'm not sure but I guess it might be spelled "bawled out". But I will leave that for the English Majors on this blog, maybe even some of the students who did really well on the recent standardized testing in the Coatesville Schools! In fact, kudos to the teachers in the CASD, given the raw materials they have, it is nice to see them shaping some better-educated students or, at least, better test takers. Anyway, thanks for the memories and I look forward to more postings that "rank" on Patsy and her constituents. (rank, cut, psyche...there's some more of those oldies but goodies!)

Check out "expatriot's" background info. It looks like he thinks Coatesville's "diversity" is the reason it has problems.
It couldn't be because his grandfather and his buddies kept everyone who wasn't of European descent from getting a good education or housing.
People like "expatriot" are the problem with the world, and never seem to go away completely.

Ignore his ignorance.

"expatriot's" comment are even more offensive when you consider that he helped get Patsy elected.

Come on "expatriot", we know who you are.

I think it's great that a movie is being filmed around here. It will be fun to watch and recognize things.

Some miscellaneous thoughts on these odd posts:

1. yes, the phrase is "bawled out", "ball them out" sounds, um, unfortunately spelled.

2. The City of Coatesville probably ought not get any revenue from filming in South Brandywine (my jhs). South Brandywine is not in the city limits, the school district maybe, but not the city.

3. It's "expratriate" not expatriot or was that an attempt at wry humor?

4. More seriously, I read expatriate's background and found nothing in there to support the 5:41 comments. I am of a similar age and can attest that the Coatesville area of the early 70's held little opportunity for a lot of people. Of any ethnic background. Speaking solely of Coatesville and its immediate neighbors, the situation hasn't changed materially. Those who could take an oppotunity to leave should be regretted for they probably took useful talent with them rather than being condemned.

It's funny how easily somebody can forget where they came from.

5:41,
History is a good thing. Coatesville is a diverse area in culture and that can be contributed to the good fortune African americans, Irish americans and Italian Americans found here through the steel mill. Census reports available via web fee sites will show less then 1% of African americans were ever slaves in the Chester county area and after the 1820 census it is all but nil. This area was a strong pull and there are many underground RR stops. One being on the grounds of the Coatesville Sr. high and it is strongly believed Harriet Tugman herself had a stay here. Fleeing slaves stayed because they were given opportunities by the quakers to work and earn a honest living and did not need to flee to Canada. Irish Americans too found this area appealing and favorable to them as well as the Italians who were descriminated against and not given employment in the metropolitan area by there own "european" brothern. So to say "europeans" is racist in itself. History needs to be tweeked somewhat. I stayed in Coatesville and will weather the storm. I believe diversity is what makes this area strong and better prepares ALL children for real life and prepares them to interact and learn from each other. It is not perfect and there are closet racists on all walks of culture.

If you don't know that it is Harriet Tubman and not Tugman you can just stop with the history lesson, and when you say "less then 1% of African americans were ever slaves in the Chester county area" that is irrelevent to the struggles blacks have endured well after slavery and to some degree still today right here in Chester County.

Don't flatter yourself with a lot of rhetoric and definately don't speak on behalf of other races.

I hope that the locals are accommodating and pleasant to the film crew. I awoke this morning to find a Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpet package smeared all over my car which I park on the street...how nice!

(And before you flame me, yes I know this could happen anywhere. However, it's particularly annoying when in less than a year my car has been spit on repeatedly, condoms placed on it, paint scratches on the hood and bumpers, and now Krimpet smeared all over it.)

11:18, I think you've been flamed enough.

I thought this was about the movie coming to coatesville? I'm reading crap about racist people. All I have to say to that is "Whatever". I'm sick of people bringing that up all the time. It's way old.

Just because it's old and tired doesn't mean it can't be true. Ever hear of the Warsaw Ghetto? Nazi's moved the Jews into the ghetto by force of arms so that they could be easily disposed of when it became possible. Here they can only do it through economics/politics and by using the dumbest among the blacks (Ray) to segregate themselves. White Supremists advocate a strategy of containment regarding blacks. That's a fact. In the US most of these types come from burned out old industrial areas because education is sparse and people had bad experiences when the racial composition changed. That is what is happening here in my opinion.
ExPATriot and his kind need to keep this secret and usually cloak their intentions in libertarian or old-school patriotic language.
The victims are the decent people who don't have much money, black or white. Most whites who are not stuck in the targeted area don't pay attention and don't care.

Sorry that it's an uncomfortable subject.

Comparing the Coatesville situation to the Nazi attempted extermination of the Jews is, like most such comparisons, offensive and wrong. Noone is being shipped to gas chambers for execution. Such comparisons cheapen the horrors done to Jews and gypsies and homosexuals and other victims of Nazi depravity.

Too, I doubt that most "White Supremists" come from "burned out old industrial areas". Anybody got any sources for that assertion?

It is regrettable that folks spend time attempting to lay blame. Right now, the question occupying everybody who cares about Coatesville ought to be along the line of "What can we do to reverse the downward slide?"

People who talk about pricing their homes low to sell so that they can escape the city shouldn't be railed at -- how do we get folks to stop doing this?

The last census records I saw indicated that Coatesville was about 49% African-American and 40% Caucasian. To me that indicates that for Coatesville to progress, either one race needs to leave or members of the two races need to cooperate.

In Coatesville itself, it's not about the races getting along. The divide is not along racial lines. But I do beleive that there are people who wish that to be the case.
Namely, expatriate.
Did not mean to make too much of the comparison with Nazi Germany.
Also frustrated at a county-wide system that seems absolutley calous toward our problems, if not a little bit responsible for them.
